Dealing With Perfectionist Young Athletes
Do you have a young perfectionist golfer that has trouble dealing with mistakes and wants to do everything themselves?
Dr. Patrick Cohn, golf psychology expert and author of the Golfer’s Mental Edge CD program, teaches amateur to tour professional golfers how to improve their mental game of golf using golf psychology strategies developed over the last 20 years of his career.
In this week’s golf psychology session, mental game of golf expert and author of The Mental Game of Golf, Dr. Cohn, answers a question from sports parent with a perfectionist golfer.
Here is the question Dino asks this week:
“I have a 10 year old young golfer who is talented. I’m facing a number of challenges in that she is a perfectionist, she doesn’t accept mistakes, and she wants to do everything herself without help form me… I’m trying to figure out the best way to help her while staying out of the way. I was wondering what is the best way for me to get educated from you in order to appropriately be supportive and a helping sports dad.”
COHN: “It’s always a challenge as a sports parent to have a perfectionist… It’s a double edge sword…”

Changing My Routine Has Been a Big Help
“You helped me with my routine—it’s almost like it has a flow to it—you pull your club and boom you are into it. You should glide through the routine. It’s when you try to make yourself stick to a cadence; the routine feels out of sync. Helping me get into the flow of the routine has been a big help.”
