Spieth’s Mental Game Collapse At Masters
At the Masters this past weekend, I’m sure you saw that Jordan Spieth was leading by 5 shots with 9 holes to play during Sunday’s final round.
He then went on to bogey 10 and 11. At the 12th hole he had a disaster, some people called it the worst collapse in history. He landed 2 balls in the water and made quad.
What was going on with him during that time? Jordan Spieth won the Masters last year and also the US Open but in the back 9 of the Masters this year, he crumbled–going 6 over on 3 holes.
I was interviewed by NPR radio to get my take on what happened with his meltdown.
“What did you think about what happened on the 12th hole?”
He might have been a bit frustrated from making bogey on 10 and 11 and this might have carried over to the 12th hole.
The 12th hole is deemed one of the hardest holes in golf, and Spieth doesn’t have a good history on it.
Spieth acknowledged that he was collapsing by telling his caddie. He had a lot of thoughts running through his head at that moment.
Since he messed up the day before he was probably thinking “here we go again.”
Often times, golfers will reflect back on previous rounds and since he messed up at the end the day before he was already setting himself up to overthink and over-control his shot.
Also, he didn’t have a good finish to Saturday’s round and that might have played on his mind on the back nine on Sunday.
All it takes is a little bit of doubt or a little bit of indecision to throw a golfer off of his game. And a lack of commitment on hole number 9, cost him the lead.
What will Spieth do after the Masters? Spieth is a professional and will focus on his game and practice where he went wrong so he can improve the next tournament.
