If You Think You Can, You’re Likely to Succeed

How to Be a Confident Athlete

How to Be a Confident Athlete

Do you believe in your ability to perform?

Are you confident as an athlete?

Do you talk yourself into defeat or victory?

The Ireland rugby team recently took Australia 2-1 in a Test series. Rob Herring, Ireland hooker, said belief was the key factor in his team’s success.

“There’s a lot of belief in the squad and we’ve shown throughout the last year that we can come back and hold out in those big moments.”

Herring also commented that his team is, “Quite a tight group and from the three and half weeks we’ve been on tour, that sense of being tight-knit has grown considerably.”

The Irish rugby team demonstrates a level of cohesiveness…

Being tight-knit means they value and respect one another and their team. They are also fully invested in their team goals and mission.

Energy is contagious, and when just one person in a tight group believes, everyone else starts to believe.

Herring said:

“That’s the kind of belief you need to keep building going into a World Cup.”

My brother and I grew up with this well-known family of four kids. We all played sports together through high school and were all really athletic.

The youngest in the family of four was short with a small build. Basketball was her sport and I’m pretty sure she never got over 5’5”.

Her size didn’t stop her at all.

This young athlete had one of the greatest work ethics I’ve ever seen. She was always in the gym or on the blacktop working on her skills.

With each game she played, she brought the same belief and intensity.

Whether she was going up against giants or weaker opponents, she believed in her ability.

The siblings before her all went to Duke University, they were brilliant. Naturally, she also wanted to attend Duke. Though, she wanted to hoop too.

This athlete attended Duke and walked-on for the first three years of her college career. She was a fan-favorite and everyone in Cameron Indoor would cheer when she got on the floor in the last few minutes of a blowout.

Regardless of her playing time and status as a walk-on, she never lost faith and remained the same confident athlete.

In her senior year, she was granted a scholarship to play her last collegiate season as a Blue Devil.

Her hard work paid off and she was rewarded for her constant effort and unwavering belief.

She believed she could, so she did.

Similar to this athlete and the Ireland rugby team, you have to believe in yourself, your skills, and what you bring to the table.

As we say, “You can talk yourself into victory or defeat, what’s it going to be?”

When you don’t believe in yourself, your performance habitually shows it. On the other hand, when you remain confident and continuously believe, your performance is a reflection.

Believing in yourself and what you bring each day, being confident, is a significant piece to the mental skills puzzle.

“We love ‘The Confident Athlete.’ My 10-year-old daughter is an equitation rider and show jumper. We started your program as soon as we received it and got to lesson 6 just before a major competition. Natalie came 4th in the children’s open equitation and 3rd in the children’s show jumping champs. An amazing achievement on which many people commented… As a parent, it has been great for me as I now am more capable of assisting her in her mental preparation. Thanks so much!”
